Memory Stream versus File Stream

In the case of a FileStream, the backing store is a file on disk.

In the case of a MemoryStream, the backing store is a byte array within memory.

A 'backing store' is simply the technical term for a source from which bytes can be sequentially read or a destination to which bytes can be sequentially written, or both.
