Object_reference error

When you get a "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" it means that you are trying to run a method on an object that is null. ie dim server as Server = GetServer //let's say GetServer returns a null object server.ConnectTo() //you get the error here

This is due to connection problems executing a stored procedure. Does anyone know what causes the issue or provide a better understanding of it?
