Certifications are end-to-end essential syllabus for a particular technology track, designed by Microsoft!
For example if you wanted to enhance .Net fundamentals, there is an Application Foundation certification where you can gain fundamentals in collections, files, i/o, variables, etc. This will enable you gain solid confidence in the technology track.
Later you can move up to particular track like web/windows ceritification.
Adding 2-3 certification you will reach the MCPD level, then you can compare your current situation back to realize the power of certification.
Did i iterate that proper certification >> learning study material, practicing >> all together takes around 2 months per cert.
Your friends may come up with dumps, but they are shortcuts without gaining full advantage, dumps are good only after solid learning.

But from the 2nd year, one must start enhancing his/her skills. (It is understood that only 1 year experience is not enough to make someone 100% perfect on basics.)
If your basics are clear, you can easily grasp new technologies or framework. In programming, you can't take rest. Your 24 hours will not be sufficient to have a perfect mastery on technologies. Day by day, new one will be coming and you will be running behind them.
Now, coming to your main concern and that is How you should prepare for career growth. Well, you just have a piece of paper and note down the technologies you know along with your hold (rate yourself on certain points) on them. Then pick the one on which you feel to boost yourself and start looking at threads on that. You may find many questions that were really not in your mind along with solutions. Meanwhile you can start looking at the series of articles on that topic. Don't try to hunt more and more resources. Just keep focus on 2-3 main technology specific websites. It saves your time and make good interest. I have seen peoples wasting their time on internet for looking better resources. They just copy contents, make bookmarks etc but never have time to read them. Avoid these things, Just go for better understanding on topics. Once you are okay with all topics, go for deep and again one by one.
I hope, answer wouldn't be too lengthy to read upto this line
All the Best!!!
