As far as I know a sniffer is entirely unnecessary, unless the term sniffer means something very different for clouds than what they have been. A sniffer typically is something that spies on connections; they provide an alternative way to see what is happening in a networdk, different from the software doing the networking. A sniffer can be a diagnostic tool but it is not part of any application design.

Sniffer is occasionally used for a program that analyzes data other than network traffic. For example, a database could be analyzed for certain kinds of duplication.
