CES 2026 is already drawing attention ahead of its official opening, as early preview events in Las Vegas showcase next-generation consumer technology. Among the robots, AI devices, and smart home innovations, one standout product is a pair of sunglasses that can instantly change their tint at the swipe of a finger.
The sunglasses, called Povec C1, are being demonstrated by startup Povec Optics. According to the company’s cofounder, the Povec C1 is the world’s first electrochromic sunglasses designed for everyday outdoor use. The glasses allow users to switch between tinted and clear lenses instantly by sliding a finger along a touch-sensitive panel on the frame.
Unlike traditional sunglasses, which require different lenses or clip-on attachments to adjust light levels, Povec C1 enables on-demand tint control in a single pair. The result is a seamless transition that is both functional and visually striking. The glasses feature a modern sports-style frame and will be available in multiple color options.
While not as complex as some of the advanced robotics or AI systems on display at CES Unveiled, the product stands out for its simplicity and broad appeal. User-controlled tint is an easy-to-understand feature that could resonate with a wide audience and potentially go viral.
Povec Optics says the electrochromic technology behind the glasses was originally developed for automotive applications, including use in vehicles such as the Audi E5 Sportback. The company now sees strong use cases for outdoor enthusiasts, including cyclists, skiers, runners, and boaters who frequently move between varying light conditions.
The sunglasses are powered by a rechargeable battery and charge via USB-C. According to Povec Optics, a single charge can last up to 28 days under normal usage.
Povec Optics is not the first company to experiment with user-controlled tinted eyewear. Similar products from other brands have appeared at previous CES events, including models that allow both tint and color changes. However, Povec aims to differentiate itself through design, battery life, and pricing.
The startup is targeting a launch in May 2026, with an expected price range between $250 and $350, placing the product in the premium eyewear category. With CES 2026 just getting started, the Povec C1 sunglasses offer an early glimpse into how innovative materials are making their way into everyday wearable technology.
