Github is thrilled to announce the general availability of sub-issues, issue types, advanced search, and increased item limits in GitHub Projects. These new features are designed to help teams plan, manage, and track work more effectively across projects of all sizes. Here’s what’s new:
Stay Organized with Issue Types
Managing issues across multiple repositories can get messy. That’s why we’ve introduced issue types—so you can label your work as a Feature, Bug, or other category. This brings structure and clarity to your project boards and helps your team quickly understand the scope and status of any task. It also makes it easier to prioritize and report on progress across your organization.
Break Work Down with Sub-Issues
Big features or goals often involve a lot of smaller steps. Now, with sub-issues, you can break down larger issues into manageable tasks that are clearly linked together. This makes it easier to track the full progress of a project and ensures nothing gets overlooked. Whether you're working solo or with a team, sub-issues give you a clear, organized workflow.
Search Smarter with Advanced Filters
Finding the right issue shouldn’t be a hassle. With our new advanced search tools, you can use filters like AND, OR, and parentheses to narrow down exactly what you’re looking for. Whether you’re looking for a specific bug, feature, or a mix of both, advanced search helps you zero in on the tasks that matter most—quickly and efficiently.
More Space for Your Projects
You asked, and we listened. We’ve dramatically increased the limit for GitHub Project items from 1,200 to 50,000. This means you can scale up your planning and tracking without worrying about hitting limits. Whether you’re managing a massive product roadmap or just have a lot of ideas, there’s now room for it all.
A Smoother, Faster GitHub Issues Experience
We’ve made several improvements to the GitHub Issues interface to make your experience smoother and more intuitive. Some highlights include a new filter bar with autocomplete and syntax highlighting, easier issue creation, better organization of templates, and faster performance when loading long issue lists. These changes are all about helping you get work done faster, with less friction.
