![Pixel Watch 5 (1)]()
Google has unveiled the Pixel Watch 5, its latest smartwatch designed around two major priorities: Gemini Intelligence and Google Health. Announced on August 12, 2026, the watch adds proactive AI assistance, improved GPS tracking, new fitness tools and Health Guardian features, including breathing emergency detection and monthly health-trend summaries.
The Pixel Watch 5 will be available in 41mm and 45mm sizes, starting at $399 and $429, respectively. Pre-orders begin August 12, with the watch reaching store shelves on August 20. A 45mm Stephen Curry Special Edition costs $579 and arrives September 3.
The announcement signals a broader shift in Google’s smartwatch strategy. Rather than treating the watch primarily as a notification and fitness device, Google is using AI, contextual computing and health analytics to make the Pixel Watch more proactive.
Gemini Moves Toward Proactive Assistance
Gemini is at the center of the Pixel Watch 5 experience.
Google’s At a Glance feature can surface context-sensitive information on the watch face without requiring users to search for it. Examples include displaying a boarding pass when a user arrives at an airport or showing the remaining stops during a commute.
Google has also improved Raise to Talk, allowing users to raise their wrist and speak directly to Gemini. The assistant can perform actions such as starting a workout, setting a timer or retrieving information such as dinner reservations from Gmail.
Some core actions are processed using on-device AI, which Google says allows them to respond with low latency even when the watch is offline.
One-Handed Gestures
Pixel Watch 5 also introduces a double-pinch gesture for interacting with proactive Gemini suggestions.
Instead of tapping through the watch interface, users can use the gesture to select, confirm or send an action. The feature is designed for situations where users want to interact with the watch while keeping their other hand occupied.
Google is effectively combining voice, contextual suggestions and gesture controls to reduce the amount of interaction required on the small display.
New Processor Improves Performance
The Pixel Watch 5 is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 Accelerated processor and a dual-chip architecture designed to balance performance and power consumption.
Compared with the Pixel Watch 4, Google says the new watch has 50% more RAM, a 12% CPU improvement and is 20% faster overall.
The additional processing capacity is important as Google expands Gemini and other AI workloads on the watch.
Google Claims Its Most Accurate GPS Yet
GPS accuracy is another major focus of Pixel Watch 5.
Google says the watch provides twice the accuracy of previous generations in challenging environments and delivers its most accurate GPS route tracking to date. The company says its internal testing showed the Pixel Watch 5 outperforming the Apple Watch Ultra 3 and Garmin Fenix 8 Pro.
Google is using technology derived from Google Maps to improve positioning. The system can model satellite signal paths through 3D building models, helping compensate for reflections in dense urban environments.
The watch also uses information from a global network of weather reference stations to account for atmospheric conditions that can affect satellite measurements.
Google’s comparison, however, comes from an internal July 2026 study using pre-production Pixel Watch 5 devices. The testing covered outdoor running, walking and cycling sessions lasting three hours or less under good network conditions. Independent testing will therefore be important before treating the company’s claim as a general performance benchmark.
Google Health Coach Adds Adaptive Fitness Guidance
Pixel Watch 5 expands its fitness capabilities through Google Health Coach.
The system can use recovery information such as sleep and heart-rate variability to adjust workout recommendations. For example, Google describes a scenario where the system could recommend indoor yoga instead of an intense outdoor run during an afternoon heat wave.
Google is also developing an on-wrist Strength Training experience. It will provide step-by-step workout guidance, track sets and rest periods, and allow users to record weights and repetitions directly from the watch.
The strength-training experience is marked as coming soon, rather than being available at launch. Google Health Coach will also allow users to create and customize strength routines through the Google Health app.
Sleep Tracking Gets More Accurate
Google says Pixel Watch 5 improves sleep-stage detection by 15% compared with its previous-generation algorithm.
The watch adds bedtime automations that can automatically pause audiobooks when the user falls asleep, along with a dedicated bedtime watch face.
Another feature, Smart Wake, monitors heart rate and movement during the 30 minutes before a scheduled alarm and attempts to identify a lighter stage of sleep for waking the user before the set alarm time.
Health Guardian Adds Breathing Emergency Detection
The most significant health-related addition is breathing emergency detection, which Google describes as an industry-first feature for the wrist.
Pixel Watch 5 combines signals from its PPG sensor, accelerometer and barometer with on-device AI to monitor for severe, persistent drops in oxygen saturation that can occur during certain breathing emergencies. Google cites scenarios including drug toxicity accidents, severe pneumonia, and choking.
If the watch detects a potential breathing emergency and determines that the wearer is unresponsive, it can automatically call emergency services and transmit the user’s location.
The feature is initially launching in certain European markets. Google says it has not been cleared or evaluated by the U.S. FDA. The company also states that breathing emergency detection may not identify every emergency and is not intended to diagnose or treat medical conditions.
The feature has additional limitations. For example, Google says it is not intended for users with certain preexisting respiratory conditions, pregnant users, or people who require continuous medical oxygen monitoring. Emergency calling also depends on the watch or paired phone having sufficient battery and cellular connectivity.
Three New Monthly Health Trends
Google is also adding three monthly health-trend summaries:
These features use Google’s Health Foundation Models, which Google says were trained on billions of minutes of sensor data from users who opted in and validated against clinical measurements.
The reports are designed to highlight longer-term changes rather than provide real-time clinical measurements.
Google explicitly classifies these features as general-wellness and informational tools. They are not intended to diagnose disease, replace clinical measurements, or guide medication or treatment decisions.
Display, Battery and Design
Pixel Watch 5 features a 3,000-nit domed Actua 360 display, along with 11 new glanceable complication styles and two new watch faces.
Google is also adding generative watch faces designed to adapt to a user’s personal style.
Battery life reaches up to 30 hours for the 41mm model and 40 hours for the 45mm model, although actual battery life varies according to usage and enabled features.
Google is also emphasizing a repairable architecture, giving the watch a longer-term hardware maintenance angle.
New color options include Fog, Canyon for the 41mm model, and Olive with Pyrite housing. The watch uses HNBR bands, while the Stephen Curry Special Edition includes an exclusive sweat-wicking performance loop band.
