Copilot Studio extension

REDMOND, Wash. — January 14, 2026 — Microsoft announced that the Copilot Studio extension for Visual Studio Code is now generally available, giving developers and teams full support to build, edit and manage AI-powered agents from within their favorite integrated development environment.

The extension brings powerful agent development workflows into VS Code, allowing teams to treat Copilot Studio agent definitions like software. This includes version control, collaboration with pull requests, change history tracking, and repeatable deployments—all within familiar development processes.

Streamlined AI Agent Development Workflow

Developers can now work seamlessly between cloud-based Copilot Studio and their local environment, improving productivity and governance:

  • Local editing and source control: Clone agent definitions from Copilot Studio and edit YAML components with built-in syntax highlighting and IntelliSense in VS Code.

  • Familiar developer tools: Use standard Git workflows and VS Code productivity features to manage agent evolution and team collaboration.

  • Repeatable deployments: Changes can be previewed and redeployed directly from the IDE, supporting reliable development lifecycles.

Bringing AI and Software Engineering Closer

By aligning AI agent creation with conventional software development practices, Microsoft said the extension helps teams maintain engineering rigor as projects grow in complexity. This release marks a milestone in making Copilot Studio capabilities more accessible and integrated into everyday developer workflows.

The Copilot Studio extension is available now through the Visual Studio Code Marketplace for developers and teams building AI solutions that combine conversational, task-oriented and autonomous behaviors.
