October 1, 2025 – OpenAI today announced major new partnerships with Samsung Electronics and SK hynix as part of its Stargate initiative, the company’s global AI infrastructure platform. The collaboration aims to strengthen AI chip supply, expand data center capacity, and position Korea as a global leader in AI development.
Strategic Partnership Highlights
The announcement followed a high-level meeting in Seoul with President Lee Jae-myung, Samsung Executive Chairman Jay Y. Lee, SK Chairman Chey Tae-won, and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.
Key focus areas include:
Advanced Memory Production: Samsung and SK hynix will scale up advanced memory chip manufacturing, targeting 900,000 DRAM wafer starts per month to support OpenAI’s next-generation AI models.
AI Data Centers in Korea: OpenAI signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) to explore building new AI data centers outside Seoul, encouraging balanced regional growth.
Telecom and Infrastructure Expansion: Partnerships with SK Telecom, Samsung C&T, Samsung Heavy Industries, and Samsung SDS will assess additional data center projects across Korea.
Enterprise AI Adoption: Samsung and SK will integrate ChatGPT Enterprise and OpenAI APIs into their operations to optimize workflows and drive innovation.
