Cannot connect to SQL Server in the Data Source Configuration wizard

I am trying to add a new data source visually using Visual Studio 2008 and SQL Server 2000 but the server list is not being populated at the Data Source Configuration wizard. Been stuck at this stage for days. Please help in this regard.
