How to reset password of SQL server account?

As I am using SQL server account since 2009 so had recommend it to my friend in the end of this month. As my friend has no idea about it and he asked me how can he reset SQL server password if it becomes lost and forgot.

Can anyone have sufficient solution for this?

What is important is that while installing SQL Server, you choose Mixed mode authentication, meaning, both Windows Authentication + UserId and password authentication.

Then add currently logged in user (to Windows) to sysadmin (system administrator) group of SQL Server. In addition, give password to sa (system administrator) account.

Now, if you forget the password of "sa" user, you can always log-in as a Windows user, which also a sysadmin. Once inside, you can change the password of "sa" user.

Hope it is clear. If not, please ask.

If you do not install as above and just have sa user and forgot it's password, I don't think there is any way to get in.

In SQL Server Management Studio > Open a new query > Execute the follow command:
GO
ALTER LOGIN [sa] WITH DEFAULT_DATABASE=[master]
GO
USE [master]
GO
ALTER LOGIN [sa] WITH PASSWORD=N'NewPassword' MUST_CHANGE
GO
The NewPassword is set for your SQL Server sa account.

Or you can also take the help of third party password reset tool (http://www.sqlpasswordrecovery.repair-sql.net/) to reset your password.

Hi Alex,

Please follow the below given steps :
1. First Login into sql server using windows authentication
2. In Object Explorer pane, Click on Security folder and open it
3. Open Login folder under security folder.
4. Right click on sa and click properties
5. you will find a new tab for password and confirm password, from here you can change your password.
