What you might be thinking of, is the smiley of ":-)" to be sent, and on the other hand it would be converted to a smiley for a smile. That is a mobile-phone based function, generally only the text is sent, the mobile phone changes that text to a graphical notation of the smiley, that is because some mobiles do not support the graphical notation and they won't be able to show anything at all other than an inverted-question-mark for showing the character not supported thing.
