Presently inweb development WebAPI is in demandfor the demand of RESTFul service. Mostly UI developments are script based, client side and lightweight. Ex. Ahgular, React etc To accomodate this through REST Microsoft has developed WebAPI. But WebAPI is evolved from WCF and core knowledge of SOA, Web service based technolpogy in required. So I would suggest have WCF base knowledge and then get WebAPI hands on.
