The decisions made in the coming years about how AI enters classrooms will define how a generation engages with both technology and learning. To help guide this journey, we’re launching two major initiatives: a Higher Education Advisory Board to shape Claude’s role in academia, and AI Fluency courses co-created with educators to help teachers and students develop practical, responsible AI skills.
Higher Education Advisory Board: Guiding AI in Academia
Anthropic has convened a distinguished Higher Education Advisory Board to ensure AI strengthens learning and critical thinking rather than undermining them.
The board is chaired by Rick Levin, former Yale University President (1993–2013) and Coursera CEO (2014–2017). Levin brings unparalleled experience bridging traditional higher education and global online learning.
Anthropic is deeply committed to AI safety and responsibility in its products and every aspect of its business,” said Rick Levin. “With the help of its newly formed advisory board, it is striving to bring these values to higher education. Our role is to advise the company as it develops ethically sound policies and products that will enable learners, teachers, and administrators to benefit from AI’s transformative potential while upholding the highest standards of academic integrity and protecting student privacy.
Board members include,
David Leebron: Former President of Rice University, expert in research expansion and student success.
James DeVaney: University of Michigan leader in academic innovation and lifelong learning.
Julie Schell: University of Texas, Austin, specialist in educational technology transformation.
Matthew Rascoff: Stanford University, Vice Provost for Digital Education, advancing digital learning access.
Yolanda Watson Spiva: President of Complete College America, national leader in student success and AI adoption in higher education.
AI Fluency Courses: Building Practical Skills
![Anthropic]()
To meet the needs of educators and students, Anthropic has launched three new AI Fluency courses. Developed with professors Rick Dakan (Ringling College of Art and Design) and Joseph Feller (University College Cork), the courses are released under a Creative Commons license, making them freely adaptable by any institution.
AI Fluency for Educators: Practical strategies for integrating AI into teaching, from course design to classroom discussions.
AI Fluency for Students: Teaches responsible AI collaboration for assignments, research, and career planning while reinforcing critical thinking.
Teaching AI Fluency: A guide for faculty to introduce AI literacy across campuses, including instructional frameworks and curriculum design.
The Path Forward: Co-Creating Responsible AI in Education
These initiatives underscore Anthropic’s commitment to working hand-in-hand with educators to shape AI’s role in academia responsibly. While the advisory board sets the strategic vision, the AI Fluency courses provide actionable resources today. Together, they empower institutions to thoughtfully adopt AI, ensuring it enhances, not replaces, the essential values of education.
