OpenAI Launches Nonprofit Commission to Tackle Global Challenges

OpenAI Nonprofit Commission Advisors

OpenAI is strengthening its commitment to driving positive change by assembling an influential Nonprofit Commission dedicated to guiding its philanthropic efforts and maximizing the benefits of AI for organizations tackling humanity’s most urgent problems.

Empowering Mission-Driven Organizations with AI

Echoing its mission to use artificial intelligence to solve the world’s hardest problems, OpenAI has reaffirmed its investment in its nonprofit foundation, ensuring it is backed by substantial resources and cutting-edge AI technology. The goal: transform how nonprofits and mission-driven organizations address critical challenges in health, education, scientific discovery, and public service.

This commission is a critical step in ensuring OpenAI’s philanthropic efforts are grounded in real-world insight and guided by people who understand how to drive impact. We’ve brought together advisors who’ve spent their lives making a difference, and their counsel will help us deliver on our mission of ensuring AGI benefits as many people as possible. As we’ve said, our nonprofit isn’t going anywhere—and this commission will be key to expanding its reach and impact.

Dr. Sue Desmond-Hellmann, OpenAI Board Member and former CEO, Gates Foundation

Guiding Principles and Advisory Role

The Commission’s primary objective is to serve as a force multiplier for communities and nonprofits addressing global issues. Advisors will:

Guide a transparent, inclusive community engagement process.

Gather insights from impacted communities, nonprofit and philanthropic leaders, and everyday people.

Focus on sectors including health, science, education, and public services, particularly in OpenAI’s home state of California.

Submit initial findings and recommendations to the OpenAI Board within 90 days, kickstarting a cycle of feedback and collaborative improvement.

A guiding principle for this effort will be putting AI to work in service of a flourishing democracy and a thriving, inclusive economy. AI may offer new ways to make headway on challenges long seen as intractable—issues that have stalled progress in communities for far too long.

Dr. Ross.
