Proton—the privacy-focused tech company known for Proton Mail and Proton VPN—has officially launched the Proton Authenticator, a new open-source two-factor authentication (2FA) app available on Android and iOS.
Built with privacy and security at its core, Proton Authenticator allows users to generate secure one-time passcodes (TOTP) for online accounts, similar to Google Authenticator or Authy. However, it stands out by offering end-to-end encrypted cloud backup and sync, so users can securely recover 2FA tokens if they switch or lose devices, without relying on third-party services.
The app supports:
-
Encrypted cloud backup via Proton Drive
-
Biometric authentication to access tokens
-
Offline functionality with no account needed
-
Full open-source code, now available
By offering complete transparency and Proton’s no-ads, no-tracking policy, the app is ideal for developers, IT professionals, and privacy-conscious users.
“With Proton Authenticator, you don’t need to choose between convenience and security,” said Proton’s team in the launch post.
Proton Authenticator is free to use and integrates smoothly into Proton’s growing ecosystem of secure services.
