How to restore my Windows XP backup files on Windows 8?

I have just installed Windows 8 on my machine and when I try to restore my old XP backup files in Windows 8, it throws an error message 'unrecognized data'. I have searched online and found many links like this one: http://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/The-Backup-File-Contains-53b24ea0/view/Discussions

But one question arise in my mind that ntbackup.exe utility does not work in Windows 8 for creating backup so why I need to install this utility on my machine for extracting backup files. Is there any external software application which can do this without installing ntbackup.exe utility?

You have mentioned error message of "unrecognized data" which you have been received while restoring previous backup files of XP in windows 8 platform. Apply the Following steps:
Required Files : An executable file named ntbactup.exe with two DLL file Ntmsapi.dll and Vssapi.dll. You can copy all these files from any Windows XP system. Store all these files on your Windows 10 PC or laptop.

You can find these files at-- C:\Windows\System32

You can also download these files from the internet.

Note: Store all the three files in the same folder.

Steps to Restore NTBackup in Windows 10

Step 1: Double click on ntbackup.exe file, ignore the pop up message and click ok

Step 2: Click next on the welcome wizard.

Step 3: Choose option “Restore Files and Settings” to restore the .bkf file

Step 4: Browse the location of the .bkf file, then OK.

Note: BKF file must be saved in the same system where the backup has to be restored.

Step 5: Click next by selecting the checkbox of folder/file/drive where you want to restore.

Step 6: Select advanced option and so that you can specify any desired location to let the backup file to be restored and then Next.

Note: By default the backup will be restored to original location.

Step 7: Click Finish after performing all the necessary options.
