what is extension method in C#?

Extension methods are used extensively (no pun intended) in LINQ because they enable you to string several methods together, each one operating on the return value of the previous one, in a single statement. You couldn't do this if they were ordinary static methods -  a separate statement would be needed for each one.

Although they have other benefits as well, I think this was the main reason for introducing them in the first place.
