Plzz can u explain more.. Completely dont know about roles and membership.. And why are roles and membership used? How to use and where to set..

Another question is.. All sites allow users to register and authenticate.. In some sites after making payment they are allowed to download like RAPIDSHARE etc.. How do they authorize users? Can someone give example to understand this concept plzz
