How do I turn visibilty on and off for a li in my site maste

My site.master contains the the below listed code. I need to turn id "MaintenenceLink" on or off based roles. Not sure how to go about this. tried several versions of FindControl without success. Doesn't give me an error just doesn't work.

Thought this had a simple solution ... something dumb that I am doing. I will try to clarify.
- Register
- Log in
if in the code behind page load I try to access MaintenenceLink directly
i.e. MaintenenceLink.Visible = true;

I get:
"Name item does not exist in current context "

If I use master.findcontrol ("MaintenenceLink") Don't get an error but doesnt turn on li iterm.

just need suggestion on what to try.
